New Philomath Community Garden

After many hurdles over recent months, Philomath is about to welcome a new community garden near the Food Bank. Property owner E.D. Hughes is donating use of approximately half an acre which was originally thought to be city property.
On Friday, May 15th, teachers and volunteers will help prepare the site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by weeding, redripping the orchard water system, removing garbage and prepping the garden soil. Charge for plots will be on a sliding scale basis. To reserve a plot or get more information, contact Chris Shonnard (chris@shonnards.com or 929-3524).

Grow Extra for the Philomath Food Bank

As you plan and plant your garden this year, consider putting in extra rows of veggies to share with the Philomath Food Bank.
With increasing job loss and financial stress, more people than ever are turning to local non-profit organizations for assistance. At the same time that monetary donations are down due to the difficult economy, the Food Bank is seeing a substantial increase in the number of people needing help in feeding themselves and their families. Food requests in Philomath are already 35% highter than last year.
