2nd Annual Cooped Up in Corvallis Tour

24 February 2010

Feeling cooped up this winter? The Corvallis Environmental Center has a solution – visit your neighbors to see the variety of backyard chicken and duck coops popping up around town.

The 2nd Annual Cooped Up in Corvallis tour is Sunday, March 7th from 12-4 pm. Participants will learn how to design, build and maintain eight different coop styles – many made from recycled materials – and get tips for incorporating fowl into backyard gardens.

Last year, over 170 people visited eight families along the tour route. This year the tour will feature all new set-ups, including a farm-scale coop, seven hens named for jazz legends, and an 18-hen coop that doubles as a clubhouse.

The tour is sponsored by the CEC’s Edible Corvallis Initiative to increase home food production and help create a just and sustainable food system in the mid-Willamette Valley.

Tickets are $7 in advance, available at the Corvallis Environmental Center office and the First Alternative Co-op stores, or $10 on the day of the tour, available at the Coop Tour Headquarters, 3615 NW Polk Avenue. Participants receive a self-guided map with fun fowl-keeping facts.
