Growers’ Network

Growing Organic Red Wheat
To promote skills, tools and information which support an infrastructure for expanding food production.
The Growers’ Network includes farmers, ranchers, fishers, value-added retailers, wholesale buyers and area residents interested in building a robust and resilient food system in the Ten Rivers foodshed.
One boots-in-the-field project promotes growing beans, grains and edible seeds for local consumption. Ten Rivers, as part of the Willamette Valley Bean and Grain Coalition, hosts gatherings for farmers to share information concerning crops, equipment and markets. Surveys to assess demand among local restaurants, grocers and institutions will further aid in appropriate planning and planting, and a work group to develop or adapt small scale equipment and implements to ease manual labor on smaller plots is a considered parallel project.

Gathering Local Ag History
A feasibility study to develop local value-added food processing capacity and a training facility is planned. Further, linking and expanding community kitchens throughout the foodshed for canning and food preparation classes will encourage self-sufficiency as well as family health and food security.
If you’re a history buff, you may want to join the group’s initiative to capture the local history of agriculture (crops, processing, markets, policy) via oral histories and archival research.
If you would like to be involved in Growers Network projects, please let us hear from you. And if you’re a local grower, come join us. Our meeting dates are posted on the Ten Rivers Food Web Calendar, and we would welcome your input.
